Bitter-sweet moment as Princess opens MRI suite

IT was a bitter-sweet moment for friends and colleagues of the League's late Chairman, Stuart Earl, as HRH The Princess Royal opened the new MRI scanners suite at the Conquest Hospital.

Present on Wednesday, July 17th together with Bexhill League officers and committee members were Stuart's widow Deirdre Earl-Williams, his nieces Marianne Bromley and Catherine Piper, and his cousin, Rodney Earl. The £5m scanners suite, funded by East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, houses two state-of-the-art German-built Siemens magnetic imaging scanners.

One, costing £1m, was purchased thanks to the appeal fund launched by the Conquest League. The second, costing £670,000 was funded by the Bexhill League, so enabling the Trust to complete its dual project in a single operation.

Introduced by our Chairman, Mark Sivyer, the Princess was shown the plaque outside the “Bexhill” scanner. It reads: “Funded by the League of Friends of Bexhill Hospital and dedicated to the memory of Stuart Earl (1946-2018) who as its Chairman worked tirelessly for the MRI scanner project but sadly did not see it come to fruition.”

The Princess, led by consultant radiologist Dr Justin Harris and clearly well briefed, spent time with each of the Bexhill League party, asking about the work of the League and learning of the generous bequests which make this possible before meeting their Conquest League counterparts.

Our late Chairman would have been delighted to have learned that the facility is already providing local patients with some of the finest MRI facilities in the country and saving them the necessity of travelling long distances for specialist diagnosis. The Princess later had opportunity to meet further members of the two leagues together with medical staff and appeal donors in the Conquest's Education Centre.

There, Trust chairman Steve Phoenix thanked everyone involved in the project, mentioning in the process the Bexhill League's role under Stuart Earl's leadership. It was the Princess Royal's third visit to the Conquest Hospital, which she opened in 1993. To applause, she unveiled a plaque commemorating her opening of the MRI suite.
